KIDS & KUBS SOFTBALL FACTS

The Kids & Kubs Senior Softball Club was founded in 1930 and is the oldest continuously operating senior softball Club in the United States. It was officially chartered in 1938 to promote and play exhibition softball games for the entertainment and pleasure of the members of the City of St. Petersburg, as well as the enjoyment of visiting tourists and people in and adjacent to St. Petersburg, Florida.

Administered by a member Board that operates within a Charter, Bylaws, and Playing Rules, communicating with the Club membership monthly from October through April, and published on the Club website.

A Trust Fund operated as a 501© (3) Corporation, the Club annually distributes 51% of the funds to local charities. The Club is not a part of the local Parks and Recreation Department. The Club rents the playing field from the city and is a line item in the Club budget.

No admission is charged for events held at North Shore Park, home of the Kids and Kubs. Trust fund revenues and player memberships sustain the Kids and Kubs budget. Events such as the annual Mayor’s game, the Babe Ruth statue dedication, regular-season games, and numerous Saturday exhibition games that may take place during the regular-season schedule are free to attend.

The trademarked name “The World-Renowned Kids and Kubs” was copyrighted on July 1, 1983. The St. Petersburg Museum of History archives the Club’s achievements.

The mission of the Club is to provide age-appropriate activity for women and men 75 years and older, using slow pitch softball as the foundation for the activity of choice.

The Three-Quarter Century Club, founded in 1923, created the Kids and Kubs near the end of its existence in 1933. Previously, the Club served as a gathering spot for non-drinkers. Weddings, charity events, dinner dances, Bridge and Mahjong, and a Quilting group were popular. One of the last survivors, baseball would be the only program of the local club’s effort to survive.

Player safety is a priority. The pitcher is protected by a screen 46 feet from home plate, and face masks are optional. Stealing bases and sliding are not permitted. Any CDC protocols are observed.

You do not have to be a former superstar Minor League baseball player to be a member of the Kids & Kubs. While we do have experienced players, we also have players who are relatively new to the game.

Kids & Kubs makes provisions for players with challenges, including a “short base” option for those with mobility issues.

Typically, the Club is composed of four teams—The Kids, The Kubs, The Kats, and The Kolts- that play each other on a rotating basis. Teams are chosen to balance player skill levels.

The regular season runs from late October to mid-April. Games are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning at 9:30 AM, at North Shore Park, 901 North Shore Drive, across from the Aquatic Complex on North Shore Blvd. in Downtown St. Petersburg.

In 2018, the Club established a communications plan that included updating the website, establishing a Facebook page, instituting a QR code, reviewing the annual brochure, and digitally formatting Club archives to establish a more visible footprint in the community and assist the community and players in accessing the history of the activities over the past 97 years of the Three Quarter-Century Club (AKA Kids and Kubs) via a press release contact list o
